Shropshire County Council maintains a network of 5,100 km of road and approximately 1,200km of footpaths and cyclepaths. On average the council spends around £1.65 million a year on treating this network during the winter. Over the last week the Council has used 2,200 tonnes of salt to treat the county’s roads.

If there is a risk of snow or ice divisional surveyors located in the northern, central and southern parts of the county carry out winter lookouts usually during the evening and 3am in the morning to assess local conditions and call out the gritting fleet at the appropriate time. The Council has 30 gritters and 120 snowploughs across the county including 5 new gritters. Throughout the last week these gritters have been working at full capacity.

Using Tracking Telematics provided by local company Plant i Ltd Shropshire are able to monitor routes gritted, black spots, amount of salt laid and where ploughs were used along with 2 way communications with the drivers.gritters_going_out_150

Plant i also provide this valuable service for other County Councils and Enterprise plc.

During this extreme weather we should thank all the drivers and supervisors for working around the clock to keep our Highways as clear as possible.

We spent time looking at several tracking systems, Plant i developed a report for us that allows us to monitor our coaches and service bus routes so we ensure all bus stops are visited on time. This has become a very valuable tool in managing our fleet. Wyn LLoyd.
